@Risk: Security Alert
OUCH! Security Awareness
Case Leads DFIR Digest
Industrial Control Systems
Industrials & Infrastructure

@RISK provides a reliable weekly summary of (1) newly discovered attack vectors, (2) vulnerabilities with active new exploits, (3) insightful explanations of how recent attacks worked, and other valuable data

A key purpose of the @RISK is to provide the data that will ensure that the 20 Critical Controls (the US and UK benchmark for effective protection of networked systems) continue to be the most effective defenses for all known attack vectors. But since it is also valuable for security practitioners, SANS is making it available to the 145,000 security practitioners who have completed SANS security training and others at their organizations who hope to stay current with the offensive methods in use.

NOTABLE RECENT SECURITY ISSUES
SELECTED BY THE TALOS SECURITY INTELLIGENCE AND RESEARCH GROUP

Title: Certain Dell Laptops Found to Ship with Root Certificate, Private Key
Description: Researchers have found that certain Dell Laptops ship with a pre-installed root certificate and private key corresponding to the certificate. The certificate can be identified by name as "eDellRoot" in the certificate trust store within Windows. This issue could potentially allow an attacker to man-in-the-middle a secure connection and steal sensitive information. End users are advised to remove the certificate from the trust store to reduce the risk of exposure.

Snort SID: 36887

Title: ARRIS Cable Modems Found to Generate Passwords Deterministically and Contain XSS and CSRF vulnerabilities
Description: A researcher has discovered that ARRIS cable modems contain multiple vulnerabilities as well as a "backdoor in a backdoor". Using a publicly known algorithm, it's possible to generate a "password of the day" for various ARRIS cable modem models and login as a technician. Once logged into the modem, an attacker could enable remote administration, login to the cable modem, and obtain a BusyBox shell.

Title: VMware Issues Advisory to Address Apache Flex BlazeDS Vulnerability in Certain Products
Description: VMware has issued a security advisory for VMware vCenter Server, vCloud Director, and Horizon View to address an XML eXternal Entity (XXE) vulnerability in Apache Flex BlazeDS. Flex BlazeDS is a software package used within several VMware products that has been identified to contain this vulnerability. VMware has released updated software packages to update Flex BlazeDS and correct the flaw.
